Hi Peter- if you read through the responses and my responses to those responses you should get a good sense of how the piece was received. One piece mentioned often was in hardware companies or operationally complex companies there are another set of logistics and analysis needed that the product manager needs to own. Another was a debate over the “pm as mini CEO” meme which I strongly disagree with since PMs don’t generally have authority nor power over resource allocation.
I agree that the role is unique to the company — at least in the sense of the balance of external user feedback, data analysis, getting company stakeholders aligned, and working specifically with your team. Though the role will be slightly different no matter where you are working, at the core the goal should still be the same — simply helping your team ship the best products for your users.
